Identity as a Third Skin: How the School Playground Narrates Who We Are and Where We Want to Go
Artist and thinker Friedensreich Hundertwasser proposed his theory of the five skins to explain how people inhabit the world: the skin of the body, clothing, the home, social identity, and finally, the planet. When we translate this to the school context, we discover that the educational space—and particularly the playground—functions as that collective third skin enveloping the community and transmitting a silent message about who we are, what we value, and what we aspire to build.
