Nature as an External Brain: Outdoor Spaces that Regulate, Inspire, and Teach

We are increasingly understanding the impact that the physical environment has on children’s well-being and learning. Among all the elements that can transform a school playground, the presence of nature is, arguably, the most powerful. We are not talking about ornamentation or ‘adding greenery for aesthetics’. We are talking about a pedagogical and neurobiological resource capable of improving attention, emotional regulation, deep play, and social coexistence.

However, many schools fall into the same trap: introducing homogeneous, aligned nature with limited species and artificially arranged in neat order. While this type of design is clean and aesthetically controlled, it does not offer the sensory complexity that the developing child’s brain needs for optimal development.

Nature is an external brain. Complex and diverse natural spaces offer the developing child’s brain the necessary stimulation to regulate emotions, generate meaningful learning, and develop social skills. Contact with nature activates neural networks related to creativity, problem-solving, and emotional regulation.

  • Diversity of plant species
  • Varied textures and aromas
  • Presence of water
  • Multiple levels and heights
  • Semi-hidden spaces that invite exploration
  • Changing elements according to the seasons
  • Opportunities for deep sensory play
