More Than Recess: How to Design a Playground that Enhances the Child’s Brain
21 Keys for Creating a Neuroeducational School Playground
A playground that is well designed both neuro- and pedagogically is not simply a recreation space, but rather a living laboratory for learning, regulation, and bonding. Each proposal, invitation, texture, color, plant, and shape communicates an educational intention: to care for the brain through the body and the environment. To generate ideas and facilitate movement, experimentation, and relationships. In this article I will attempt to break down what I consider to be the 21 keys, requirements, and criteria for designing a school playground.
1. Narrative and visual identity. Spaces communicate messages through their visual and narrative design. A playground with its own identity generates a sense of belonging and community.
2. Active movement zones. Spaces designed for physical play, movement, and activity that enhance children’s motor development.
3. Areas of quiet and calm. Corners dedicated to rest, reflection, and emotional regulation.
4. Natural elements. Integration of plants, trees, water, and natural materials that enrich the environment sensorially.
5. Universal accessibility. Inclusive design that allows all children, regardless of their abilities, to enjoy the space.
6. Sensory stimulation. Proposals that activate all senses: textures, aromas, sounds, colors.
7. Socialization spaces. Areas designed to facilitate interaction, cooperative play, and building relationships.
8. Neurological safety. Spaces that generate trust and emotional safety in children.
9. Creativity and construction. Zones with loose materials that invite creation, experimentation, and building.
10. Contact with nature. Proximity to natural elements that promote biophilia and well-being.
These elements, combined strategically, create a playground that is much more than a recreation space: it is an environment that enhances learning, regulation, and the integral development of the child.
