Emotion: The Engine of Learning
You surely remember precisely where you were and what you felt during a highly impactful event, such as the attack on the Twin Towers. This occurs because experiences with high emotional charge are embedded much more strongly in our memory. This phenomenon is called flashbulb memory and is part of episodic memory, which stores what happened, where, when, and with whom.
In the brain, this process occurs because the amygdala detects the emotion and signals the hippocampus that this memory is important and should be consolidated. Dopamine further reinforces this learning. This is why what moves us emotionally is remembered better and for longer.
Emotion in the Classroom
The same happens in the classroom: emotionally significant learning is fixed more easily. We do not only remember the information but also the context and lived experience. Although repetition helps with learning, what is charged with emotion is difficult to forget.
We learn with our whole body: breathing, heartbeat, and the nervous system all participate in attention. If the student feels safe, the prefrontal cortex can regulate emotion, think calmly, and learn. But if they perceive threat or stress, the amygdala activates, attention blocks, and learning stops.
Environments That Support Learning
This is why classrooms that generate safety, curiosity, and emotional connection—through play, participation, stories, and the bond with the teacher—support learning. In contrast, fear, public exposure of mistakes, and tense environments impede it.
