Nature as an External Brain: Spaces That Regulate, Inspire, and Teach

We are increasingly understanding the impact that the physical environment has on children’s well-being and learning. Among all elements that can transform a school playground, the presence of nature is probably the most powerful. We are not talking about decoration or “putting in greenery because it looks nice.” We are talking about a pedagogical and neurobiological resource capable of improving attention, emotional regulation, deep play, and social coexistence.

However, many schools fall into the same mistake: introducing homogeneous nature, neatly aligned, limited in species, and artificially ordered. This type of design, although clean and aesthetically controlled, does not offer the sensory complexity that the developing child’s brain needs.

Avoiding “Uniformed” Nature

In many centers we see a repeated pattern: trees of the same species, aligned millimetrically, shrubs of the same type trimmed the same way, and small green areas without variety. Although this “ordered” aesthetic may feel comfortable for maintenance, it drastically reduces the perceptual and exploratory richness of the environment.

The child’s brain responds better to environments with variations, different textures, non-symmetric forms, and natural stimuli that invite observation, touching, and discovery. When the landscape is uniform, the space becomes predictable, less attractive, and less stimulating in terms of attention, play, and emotional regulation.

Biodiversity: The Best Cognitive and Emotional Activator

Plant diversity is not an aesthetic whim. It is a necessary condition for nature to exercise its restorative and stimulating effect. Biodiversity not only sustains attention: it also increases emotional well-being and promotes calm. Different species provide different scents, colors, types of shade, textures, and seasonal behaviors.

Creating Green Islands, Not Rows of Trees

For nature to have a truly pedagogical function, its spatial organization is as important as the species chosen. Rather than placing trees or shrubs in rigid rows, it is preferable to design irregular groups, “green patches,” and differentiated micro-zones. These arrangements allow:

Creating small shelters or corners for symbolic play or emotional regulation.

Forming spontaneous pathways that encourage autonomous exploration.

Offering different degrees of shade, privacy, or openness depending on time of day.

Separating active and calm zones without the need for artificial barriers.

Handleable Natural Materials: Essential for Deep Play

A nature-rich playground is not limited to its vegetation. Manipulable elements are fundamental for varied, deep, and structured play to exist. Manipulating natural materials activates processes of attention, decision-making, motor coordination, and creativity.

Logs of various sizes for balance, building, and transport.

Large, safe stones as elements for symbolic and mathematical play.

Twigs, bark, and pinecones: collecting, sorting, creating.

Fine gravel, sand, or soil for sensory and scientific experimentation.

Seeds and elements that change with the season: living time on the playground.

Varying Heights, Densities, and Shades

The child’s brain responds optimally to environments with variations in light, texture, and spatial depth. Incorporating vegetation at different heights, with varied densities and heterogeneous shades, multiplies playground possibilities: leafy zones that invite calm, more open areas that permit exploration, filtered shadows that soften light without darkening, and corners with dense vegetation that facilitate symbolic play.

In Summary

A well-designed green playground is not a decorative garden: it is a device for learning, well-being, and child development. And for nature to fulfill its neuroeducational function, it must be diverse, irregular, rich in sensory stimuli, and usable by children in their daily play.

The key is not in planting plants, but in creating an ecosystem at their scale: a small educational landscape that invites them to explore, regulate themselves, investigate, imagine, and connect with their surroundings through their body and senses.
