Executive functions are a set of cognitive skills that allow individuals to direct behavior, regulate emotions, and organize thoughts. Although we often discuss attention, self-control, or flexibility as isolated capacities, they actually form an integrated system that sustains daily functioning and student learning.
Attention as a gateway
Executive attention selects what is relevant, filters distractions, and maintains focus.
An agitated, worried, or emotionally activated student cannot access their full attentional capacity.
Therefore, regulating emotion and recovering attention are processes that advance together.
Inhibitory control as the foundation of regulation
Every time a student restrains an impulsive response, they are using inhibitory control.
Without inhibition, emotion takes over.
With inhibition, emotion is regulated.
Understanding this shifts perspective: when a student explodes, interrupts, or responds harshly, it is usually not disobedience, but rather executive immaturity.
Cognitive flexibility as a tool for coexistence
Flexibility allows for changing strategies, accepting different perspectives, and adapting to new norms.

Why does all this matter for emotional management?
Regulating an emotion involves three processes:
- Detecting it (attention).
- Restraining the initial reaction (inhibition).
- Choosing another possible response (flexibility).
An intense emotion is not regulated by willpower alone: it is regulated through executive functions.
Therefore, brief activities such as rule-changing games, breathing dynamics, listening challenges, or board games strengthen the executive system.
